Ugears Tachometer Stem Lab
A tachometer is a device designed to measure the rotational speed of various parts in motors and other mechanisms. It calculates revolutions per minute (RPM). The tachometer also measures and monitors load limits to reduce or increase the speed so that the motor or mechanism operates within its optimal parameters.
The tachometer was invented by German engineer Dietrich Uhlhorn in 1817. His invention was a special device that measures centrifugal force. From 1840 this device was used in locomotives and later in cars and other vehicles. Use The tachometer is used in mechanisms where it is necessary to accurately monitor the speed to avoid the consequences of overloading. Smart motorists use tachometers to know when to shift gears and control engine load, extending the life of their vehicles.
The Tachometer 3D puzzle from the STEM Lab collection by UGEARS is a fully operational DIY wooden model of a tachometer, ready to assemble. When the lever is turned, the motion is transmitted, increasing the speed and moving the double weights in the centrifugal unit. The higher the RPM, the more centrifugal force moves the weights and moves a movable shaft to the flywheel. A dial is attached to the shaft; the more the shaft shifts (higher speed), the more the arrow deflects off the dial, indicating a higher rotational speed.
Connect the tachometer to the variator and create a new mechanism
The Variator-Tachometer system demonstrates the direct relationship between the gear ratio of a gearbox and its rpm. When the lever of the Variator is turned, the movement is transmitted through the reducer to the conical drive pulley. The rotation of the first cone is then transmitted through the belt to the other cone, the driven pulley. When the pedal attached to the housing is pressed, it shifts the fork holding the belt, changing the rotational speed of the driven pulley. When the tachometer is attached to the variator, the changing rotational speed of the driven pulley of the variator is transmitted to the reducer of the tachometer. This in turn will increase or decrease the centrifugal force on the weights, shifting the shaft with flywheel. Shifting the axis deflects the indicator on the dial to a higher or lower value. In this way, we see that changes in the gear ratio in the Variator increases or decreases the speed of the attached tachometer.
